16 months in neutral French oak
2019 Bonnie Glen Syrah
A fruit basket aroma of black berries, currants and bing cherries framed with notes of violet explodes from the glass. As the wine opens the spice component expresses notes of fresh cracked pepper and dried meats. The freshness in the wine is also accentuated with notes of menthol and new leather.
Bonnie Glen is our name for the Vivio Vineyard in Bennett Valley. Meaning "beautiful valley" in Scots, you really get a sense of place standing in this vineyard perched high above the valley, commanding gorgeous views in any direction. Planted to 3 different French clones of Syrah - 174, 470 and 877 - this southeasterly facing vineyard is sloped on volcanic soil. One of our coolest vineyard sites which leads to a beautiful balance in the resulting wines.
The fruit was harvested on the 17th of October. It was 80% destemmed and fermented on native yeasts with 20% stem inclusion. Primary fermentation lasted 16 days. ML fermentation occurred in barrel and the wine was aged for 16 months in neutral French oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered and unfined.
Food Pairing Notes
A couple of fun elements to play with in pairing are proscuitto to accentuate the meaty spice element. Duck confit would also pair perfectly with the fruit and spice components.
