14 months in neutral French oak
2016 Moaveni Vineyard Syrah
The wine opens with beautiful Thanksgiving spice aromas and develops into a palate of deep blackcurrant, blackberry and redcurrant. The savory notes include thyme and sage and combine with new leather and cedar maintaining a freshness in the palate. This wine has remarkable depth of color and flavor, the fruit promotes velvety tannins and a long, plush finish to deliver a rich and supple mouthfeel without being heavy.
Located against the Sonoma Mountain ridge, the higher elevation of this Bennett Valley vineyard has different fog patterns, which allows for evenly ripened fruit. It is a steep vineyard promoting water run-off, resulting in smaller berries and more intense flavors in the wine.
The vineyard was harvested in late September. The juice was on the skins for 18 days during fermentation prior to being pressed off to tank to begin malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked to 100% French oak barrels before aging for 14 months and bottling unfiltered and unfined.
Food Pairing Notes
Merguez sausage is perfect for both the gamey elements and the spice components.
The wine will reward those with patience to cellar a few bottles for enjoyment between 2020 and 2030.
